Following its announcements of 5 May 2021 updating the New Industrial Strategy proposed in 2020, the European Commission has additional indicated that it’ll rely fairly heavily on trade to ship on the main challenges confronted by our economies and societies in Europe. This is particularly the case in relation to sustainability, digital transformation, and international competitiveness, in addition to the need to overcome the crisis provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU Recovery and Resilience Plan launched in Spring 2021 is basically building on the aptitude of European business to design and produce the constructing blocks of the twin green and digital transition. At the same time, the EU is shaping a dense regulatory framework that doesn’t always support the liberty and adaptability wanted for corporations to develop and compete globally.
The European expertise industries, and specifically our pumps, compressors, taps and valves sectors, have for a protracted time thought of the enhancement of their world competitiveness inside the challenges of societal and environmental challenges, notably by contributing to the preparation of vitality effectivity and ecolabel regulations. In parallel, digitalisation has provided elevated alternatives and introduced new challenges, together with debates on the suitable regulatory stage (sharing of industrial knowledge, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, etc).
These developments, amidst ever extra fierce worldwide competition, require that public authorities and industry within the EU work increasingly extra intently to design and deploy methods that reinforce our competitiveness and our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This would be the topic of the initial debate kicking off our Joint EU Policy Conference, which will deliver together key policy makers from the three EU coverage establishments in cost of the Industrial Strategy and three Executives representing and illustrating the achievements enjoyed, and challenges nonetheless confronted, by these three key sectors of industry.
Specific Technical and Policy Issues
As the regulatory panorama across Europe, and certainly the entire world, turns into ever more advanced, the burden on trade solely increases. It due to this fact falls to sector particular commerce organisations, corresponding to Europump, CEIR and Pneurop, to identify and advise on these technical and policy issues most relevant to their respective sectors. In our explicit enviornment, that relates, of course, to the manufacture, distribution and use of pumps and all pump associated gear – an enormous and essential subset of industry, given the width and breadth of pump applications.
Against this backdrop, one of many main concerns when figuring out the core themes for the joint conference was to maintain up a direct reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Within this focus, the three associations intend to spotlight how, along with the importance for corporations to deal with technical aspects impacting their every day enterprise operations, they contemplate the positive function of industry in addressing societal challenges. Indeed, all of the sessions will have a technical theme matching the most applicable UN SDG, and with illustration from the European Commission together with technical consultants from trade and/or analysis institutes, they’ll each be reflective of the current legislative terrain, because it relates to pumps and pumping methods in the following key areas:
Circular Economy & Eco-design (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)

The restriction of use of materials and substances of concern (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)
The regulatory and legislative panorama across Europe is becoming more and more advanced, and business, in all its guises, must be aware and ready for what is coming.
