Transport Ministry says Thai land bridge will become transit port to rival Hong Kong

The transport minister is feeling optimistic a few new land bridge improvement which can join the southern provinces of Ranong and Chumphon. The Bangkok Post reports that the challenge will link Chumphon, on the jap coast of the Gulf of Thailand, to Ranong, on the Andaman Sea. Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob says the result might be a transit port with a capacity to rival Hong Kong.
The minister says the land bridge will be ready to deal with around 20 million twenty-foot equal units of cargo annually, and can allow maritime traffic to bypass the busy waters around Singapore. The capacity is similar to that of Hong Kong’s port, the eighth busiest on the earth, based on Saksayam.
A faster, shorter observe between Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand has been discussed for decades, along with the proposal for the Kra Canal to cut a canal between the two our bodies of water, very similar to the Panama Canal. Whilst the Kra Canal project provides more potential benefits, the initial prices and potential environmental results have led to the land bridge concept instead.
The minister says the land bridge plans are afoot to develop supporting infrastructure within the space, to find a way to promote the bridge and entice international investment. It’s understood there will be an automated container terminal to enhance effectivity, creating a smoother journey between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The goal is to chop transit time to make it a few of the lowest in the area, thereby enhancing the land bridge’s prospects of turning into the route of choice between the Indian and Pacific oceans.
The land bridge is along with the government’s Eastern Economic Corridor challenge, which PM Prayut Chan-o-cha has previously mentioned is not going to be enough to fuel the economy. As a half of the 20 year strategy, the PM said the federal government wanted to spend cash on a mega-project. The street and rail land bridge will cowl around a hundred kilometres from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand, linking sea ports on both sides. Both the land bridge, or canal, proposals can be of enormous profit to Thailand but at the detriment of Singapore which has turn out to be the region’s transport hub with its strategic location on the backside of the Malay peninsula.
